Introduction
The medical care of the obstetric patient is a fascinating, under explored field of internal medicine. Training in internal medicine rarely includes significant exposure to pregnant patients. As a result, most internists are ill-prepared to evaluate and manage medical problems in patients who are pregnant or contemplating pregnancy. The Division of Obstetric and Consultative Medicine, Department of Medicine, Women & Infants Hospital and Brown University, has responded to this need by offering the first and only Obstetric Medicine Fellowship in North America. The fellowship draws on the many strengths of the Obstetric Medicine divisions uniquely qualified internists, the faculty of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine division, and the well established Brown Medical School and OB/GYN programs to provide fellows with a stimulating two year experience in Obstetric Medicine.
The Fellowship Description
The Obstetric Medicine Fellowship is designed to provide the board-eligible or board-certified internist specialized training in the clinical care, teaching and research of medical complications of pregnancy. Through work in the inpatient and outpatient Medical Consultation Service at Women & Infants Hospital, the fellow will: acquire knowledge in the physiology of normal pregnancy and the pathophysiology of diseases occurring in pregnancy and postpartum; learn to diagnose and treat medical complications of pregnancy; and become proficient in drug administration during pregnancy. With the assistance of a faculty advisor, the fellow will have the opportunity to complete a research project in the area of medical problems in pregnancy with the expectation that the work eventually be presented at a national meeting and published in a peer review journal. As well, interested opportunities for fellows to take Brown University courses in biostatistics and epidemiology will be provided. Practical teaching skills will be developed through supervising a senior medical resident on the inpatient medical consultation service, and work in the ambulatory medical consultation clinics at Women & Infants Hospital.

It is the site of the only Obstetrics and Gynecology residency in the state, as well as fellowships in maternal-fetal medicine, urogynecology, and gynecological oncology.
Background
Women & Infants Hospital is situated on the campus of Rhode Island Hospital and together they form the largest tertiary care and trauma referral facility in Rhode Island and southeastern New England.
Brown Universtiy
Brown University is located on College Hill on the east side of Providence and is about one mile from the hospitals. Established in 1764, it provides a liberal undergraduate education as well as advanced and diversified graduate study. Brown Medical School medical students rotate through Women & Infants and Rhode Island Hospitals for many of their clerkships. Fellows at Rhode Island and Women & Infants Hospitals have appointments at Brown Medical School and access to the Universitys academic and athletic facilities.
Providence and Rhode Island
Four hundred miles of coastline, some of the most beautiful beaches in New England and extraordinary sailing waters make Rhode Island an appealing setting for the two year fellowship. According to Gourmet magazine, "Rhode Islands natural maritime beauty, cultural abundance, and good food are still largely undiscovered." Providence is the state capital and was named by the New York Times as the "best kept secret in New England." Providence is the home of many multi-cultural activities, the Rhode Island School of Design and Trinity Repertory Theater. Its proximity to both Boston (45 miles), NYC (200 miles) and Cape Cod are also an important part of the Rhode Island appeal.
